The little prince Chapter 21  (1日3分 英語で星の王子さま)

That was when the fox appeared.

“Hello,” said the fox.

“Hello,” the little prince replied politely. He turned around, but couldn’t see anyone.

“Here I am,” said the fox.

“Under the apple tree.”

“Who are you?” said the prince. “You are very pretty.”

“I’m a fox,” said the fox.

“Come and play with me,” the little prince invited him.

“I’m so sad.”

“I can’t play with you,” answered the fox. “I haven’t been tamed.”

“Oh! I’m sorry,” said the little prince.

But, on reflection, he added:

“What does ‘tame’ mean?”

“You don’t come from around here,” said the fox. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m looking for people,” said the little prince. What does ‘tame’ mean?

“People,” said the fox, “have guns, and They hunt. It’s a real nuisance! They raise chickens, too. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?”

“No,” replied the little prince. “I’m looking for friends. What does ‘tame’ mean?”

“It means something that too many people forgotten,” said the fox. “It means ‘to create ties or from bonds…’”

“Form bonds?”

“Certainly,” the fox went on. “Right now, to me, you are still a little boy just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I don’t need you. And you don’t need me either. For you, I am no more than a fox no different from a hundred thousand other foxes. But, if you tame me, we will need each other. You would be the only one in the world for me. I would be the only one in the world for you…”

“I’m beginning to understand,” said the little prince. “There was a flower…I think she tamed me.”

“It’s possible,” said the fox. “Many things are possible on the Earth…”

星の王子さま キツネ

“Oh! But this wasn’t on the earth,” said the little prince.

The fox looked at him with interest.

“On another planet?”

“Yes.”

“Does that planet have hunters?”

“No.”

“Now that interesting. Does it have chickens?”

“No.”

“Nothing’s perfect,” sighed the fox.

But the fox began to speak again.

“I live a monotonous life. I hunt chickens, people hunt me. That chickens all look alike and the people all look alike, so I get a bit bored. But if you tame me, my life will be filled with sunshine. I will run and hide when I heard the sound of other people’s footsteps. But yours will sound different. When I hear your footsteps, they will sound like music to me. And then I will come and greet you. And look! You see that field of wheat over there? I don’t eat bread. Wheat is no use to me. Wheat means nothing to me. And that’s sad. But your hair is the color of gold. So it will be wonderful when I have been tamed! The golden wheat reminds me of you. And I will love the sound of the wind in the wheat…

The fox fell silent and gazed at the little prince for a long time.

“Please… tame me!” he said.

“I would love to,” answered the little prince, “but I don’t have much time. I have friends to discover and a lot of things to get to know.

“We only understand the things that we tame,” said the fox. People don’t have time to get to know anything. They buy everything at the shops that have already been made. But no shops sell friends, so people no longer have friends. If you want a friend, tame me!”

“What do I have to do?” asked the little prince.

“You have to be very patient,” the fox told him.

“First you would have to sit down a little way away from me, like that, in the grass. I’ll look at you out of the corner of my eye and you will say nothing. Speaking gives rise to misunderstandings. But, every day, you’ll be able to sit a little closer to me…”

星の王子さま キツネ

On the next day, the little prince came back.

It would be better to come back at the same time every day,” the fox said. “If, for instance, you come at four o’clock in the afternoon, then I will start to feel happy around three. As time grows closer I will get happier and happier. By four o’clock I will be anxious and worried: I will show you the reward of happiness! But if you come at a different time each day, I will not know when I should start to prepare to be happy…We must have a ritual.”

“What’s a ‘ritual’?” asked the little prince.

“That’s something that too many people have forgotten,” said the fox. “It’s what makes one day different from another day and one hour different from another hour. For instance, the people who hunt me have a ritual. Every Thursday they go dancing with the village girls. That is why every Thursday is a wonderful day. I can stroll all over! If the hunters danced all the time, then one day would be just like any other, and I wouldn’t ever have a vacation”.

So the little prince tamed the fox.

And when it was finally time for the little prince to leave, the fox said:

 “Oh, will cry.”

“It’s your own fault,” said the little prince, “I didn’t want to hurt you, but you wanted me to tame you…”

“That’s true,” said the fox.

“But you’re going to cry!” said the little prince.

“Of course,” said the fox.

“So you’re no better off!”

“I am better off!” said the fox, “because of the golden color of the wheat.”

Then he added:

“Go back and look at the roses again. You will learn that yours is unique in the world. Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I’ll let you into a secret.

The little prince went off to look at the roses again.

“You’re not at all like my rose, you’re nothing yet,” he told them. “No one has tamed you and you haven’t tamed anyone. You’re like my fox was. He was a fox no different from a hundred thousand other foxes. But I made him my friend, and now there isn’t another one like him in the whole world.

And the rose was quite embarrassed.

“You’re beautiful but you’re empty,” the little prince told him. “No one would die for you. Certainly, my own rose, to an ordinary passerby would seem just like you. But she, and she alone, is more important than all of you, because she is the one I watered. Because she is the one I put under the cloche. Because she is the one I protected from the cold. Because she is the one I killed the caterpillars for (except two or three for the butterflies). Because she is the one I’ve listened to, complaining, boasting, or even sometimes being quite silent. Because she’s my rose.

And he returned to the fox.

“Goodbye,” he said.

“Goodbye,” said the fox.

“And here is my secret. It’s very simple: you can only truly see with the heart. What is important is invisible to the eye.

“What is important is invisible to the eye,” the little prince repeated. He wanted to be sure that he remembered this.”

“It’s the time you wasted on your rose that makes your rose so important.

It’s the time I wasted on my rose… the little prince repeated, so he wouldn’t forget.

“People have forgotten this truth,” said the fox. “But you mustn’t forget it. You are forever responsible for everything you tame. You are responsible for your rose…

“I am responsible for my rose…” the little prince repeated, so he wanted to remember.

The little prince Chapter 22 (1日3分 英語で星の王子さま)

“Good morning,” said the little prince.

“Good morning,” said the railway signalman.

“What do you do here?” asked the little prince.

“I sort out the passengers. I move thousands of travelers at one time,” said the railway signalman. “I send the trains that carry them on their way. Some trains go to the right and others go to the left.

And, with a roar of thunder, a brightly lit express train shook the signalman’s signal box.

“They’re in such a hurry,” said the little prince, “What are they looking for?”

“Even the train driver doesn’t know that,” said the signalman.

And a second train hurried by. It was traveling in the opposite direction.

“Are they on their way back already?” the little prince asked.

“Those aren’t the same people,” the signalman replied to him. “They change over.”

“Weren’t they happy where they were?”

“No one is ever happy where he is,” answered the signalman.

And a third express train hurried by.

“Are they looking for the first travelers?” asked the prince.

“They’re not looking for anything at all,” said the signalman. “They’re all asleep in there, or else they’re yawning. Only the children press their faces against the windows.

“Only children know what they are looking for,” said the little prince. “They spend time taking care of a doll and it becomes very important to them. Then if anyone takes it away from them, they burst into tears…

“They’re lucky,” said the signalman.

The little prince Chapter 23  (1日3分 英語で星の王子さま)

“Good morning,” said the little prince.

“Good morning,” said the shopkeeper.

It was a shopkeeper who sold pills developed specifically to quench thirst. If you took one pill a week, and you didn’t need to drink anymore.

“Why are you selling those pills?” asked the little prince.

“They save a lot of time,” said the shopkeeper. “Experts have calculated it all. You can save fifty-three minutes every week.

“And what would people do with the fifty-three minutes?”

“Whatever they like…”

“Personally,” said the little prince, “if I had fifty-three minutes to spare I’d take a stroll to a fountain…”

The little prince Chapter 24  (1日3分 英語で星の王子さま)

It was now the eighth day after my crash in the desert. As I listened to the tale of the shopkeeper I drank the last drop of my water ration.

“Oh,” I told the little prince, your reminiscences are all very well, but I still haven’t repaired my airplane, I haven’t repaired my airplane, I haven’t anything left to drink, and nothing would make me happier than a stroll to a fountain!

My friend the fox, he told me…

My little man, what has this got to do with the fox?

Why not?

Because I’m going to die of thirst…

Not following my argument, he replied:

It’s good to have had a friend, even if you are going to die. Personally, I’m very glad to have had a fox for a friend…

“He has no idea of the danger,” I said to myself. “He’s never felt hunger or thirst. A bit of sunshine is enough for him…”

But he gazed at me, and, as if in answer to my thoughts, he said:

“I’m thirsty too…let’s go and find a well…”

I made a gesture of resignation. It’s ridiculous to go looking for a well, at random, in the vast solitude of the desert. All the same, we set off.

After we had walked along in silence for several hours, night fell, and the stars began to shine, I stared at them as if in a dream. I was slightly feverish because of my thirst. The little prince’s word was dancing in my memory:

“So do you feel thirsty, too?” I asked.

But he made no reply. He simply said:

“Water can be good for the heart, as well.

I didn’t understand what he meant, but I said no more. By then I knew very well that there was no need.

He was tired. He sat down. I sat next to him. After a silence, he spoke again.

“The stars are beautiful because somewhere there is a flower that I can’t see from here…”

I answered, “Yes, that’s true,” and gazed in silence at the moonlight sand.

The desert is beautiful, he remarked.

And it really was. I have always loved the desert. You sit down on the sand. You see nothing. You hear nothing. And yet something beautiful fills the silence…

“The good thing about the desert,” said the little prince, “is that somewhere or other, it hides a well…”

Astonished, I suddenly understood the mysterious shimmering of the sand. When I was a little boy, I lived in an old house and legend had it that it hid a buried treasure. To be sure, no one had ever been able to find it, probably because no one had ever looked for it. But it cast a spell over the whole house. My house hid a secret deep in its heart…

“Yes,” I said to the little prince. “It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking of houses, stars or deserts, what gives them their beauty can’t be seen.

“I’m glad you agree with my fox, he said.

As the little prince went to sleep, I picked him up in my arms and set off walking again, filled with emotion.

I felt as if I were carrying a very fragile treasure. It even felt that there was nothing on earth was more delicate than he. In the moonlight, I gazed at his pale forehead, closed eyes, and his hair gently moving in the wind, I said to myself: “What I see here is nothing but a shell. The most important part is what can’t be seen…”

Watching his lips half smiling as he slept, I said to myself again: “What I find so deeply moving about this little sleeping prince, is his attachment to a flower. His love shines from inside him, like a lantern flame. And he seemed more fragile still. You have to protect lanterns: even a little bit of wind can blow them out…”

I walked on like this, and at daybreak, I found the well.

The little prince Chapter 25  (1日3分 英語で星の王子さま)

“Men,” said the little prince, “hurry to get on express trains but they don’t know what they’re looking for. So they get excited and rush around in circles…

 And he added:

“It’s not worth doing it…”

The well we had found did not look at all like the wells of the Sahara. The wells of the Sahara are simple holes dug in the sand. This one looked like a village well. But there was no village there, and I thought I was dreaming.

“It’s strange,” I said to the little prince. “It’s all ready, the pulley, the bucket, and the rope…”

星の王子さま 井戸

He laughed, touched the rope, and began to make the pulley work. The pulley creaked like an old weather vane after a long spell with no wind.

“Do you hear?” asked the little prince. We have awakened this well, and it singing…

Not wishing him to strain all by himself, I said:

Let me do it, it’s too heavy for you.

Slowly, I pulled up the bucket and put it on the edge of the well. The song of the pulley was still in my ears and, on the surface of the still rippling water, I could see the sunlight shining on the water.

“I am thirsty for this water,” said the little prince.

“Give me some to drink…”

And I understood what he had been searching for.

I raised the bucket to his lips. Closing his eyes, he drank. It tasted sweet, as it was like a party. This water was very different from any ordinary food. It was born from the walk under the stars, the song of the pulley, the effort of carrying him in my arms. It did the heart good, like a present. When I was a little boy, the lights of the Christmas tree, the music of the midnight mass, the sweetness of people’s smiles, all formed part of the radiance of the Christmas gifts I received.

“People in your world,” said the little prince,” grow five thousand roses in a single garden, but they don’t find what they are looking for there.

“They don’t find it,” I answered.

“But they could find what they are looking for in one single rose or a little water…”

“That’s true,” I said.

And the little prince added.

“But the eyes cannot see. You have to look with the heart.”

I had drunk some water. I was breathing easily. At daybreak, the sand is the color of honey. That honey color made me happy, too. So why did I still feel sad…?

“You must keep your promise,” the little prince said to me, softly, once more sitting down next to me on the sand.

“What promise?”

“You remember…a muzzle for my sheep…I am responsible for my flower…”

I took rough sketches out of my pocket.

“Your baobabs look a bit like cabbages…

OH!

And I had been so proud of my baobabs!

Your fox…his ears…they look a bit like horns…and they’re too long!”

And he laughed again.

“That’s not fair, my little friend. I didn’t know how to draw anything except for boa constrictors, seen from the inside and the outside.

“Oh, it will be fine,” he said,” Children understand.

So I drew a muzzle. And I handed it to him with a heavy heart.”

“You have plans that I don’t know about…”

But he didn’t answer. He said,

“You know,…my descent to Earth…tomorrow will be the first anniversary.”

After a moment, he went on:

“The place where I came down is not far from here…”

And he blushed.

And I was overcome once more by a strange feeling of sadness. However, one question occurred to me:

“So it wasn’t by chance that, in the morning I met you, eight days ago, you were walking along, all alone like that, a thousand miles from the inhabited region! You were walking back to the place where you fell?

The little prince blushed more deeply still.

And I added, hesitantly,

“Because of the anniversary, perhaps you were returning?”

The little prince blushed again. He never replied to questions, but when someone blushes, doesn’t that mean, “Yes”?

“Oh," I said to him, “I’m afraid for you…”

But he replied

“You should go now. You must go back to your engine. I’ll wait for you here. Come back tomorrow evening…”

But I wasn’t reassured. I remembered the fox. We are in danger of feeling sad if we let ourselves become tamed…

The little prince Chapter 26  (1日3分 英語で星の王子さま)

Beside the well there stood the ruin of an old stone wall. When I came back from my work, the next evening, I saw from some distance away my little price sitting on top of a wall, with his feet dangling. And I heard him say: "So don't you remember? This is not the exact spot."

Another voice must have answered him, for he replied:

"Yes, yes! This is the right day, but this is not the place."

I kept walking toward the wall. At no time did I see or hear anyone. The little prince, however, replied once again:

"−−Exactly. You will see my footprints in the sand. You’ll have nothing to do but wait for me there. I’ll be there tonight."

I was only twenty feet away from the wall, and I still could see nothing.

After a silence the little prince spoke again:

"You have good poison? You are sure that it will not make me suffer too long?"

I stopped in my tracks, my heart missing a beat. But still, I did not understand.

"Now go away," said the little prince. "I want to get down from the wall."

星の王子さま へび

So I looked down at the foot of the wall.−− and I leaped into the air. There before me, facing the little prince, was one of those yellow snakes that can end your life in just thirty seconds. I reached into my pocket to pull out my revolver, starting to run. But, at the noise I made, the snake let himself flow easily across the sand like the final jet from a fountain, and disappeared between the stones with an s]light metallic sound.

I reached the wall just in time to catch my little royal friend in my arms; his face was white as snow.

"What is going on here?" "Why are you talking with snakes?"

I had loosened the golden scarf that he always wore. I had moistened his temples and had given him some water to drink. And now I did not dare ask him any more questions. He looked at me very solemnly and put his arms around my neck. I felt his little heart beating like the heart of a dying bird that someone had shot with a rifle...

"I am glad that you have found what was wrong with your engine," he said. "Now you can go back home−−"

"How did you know about that?" I cried.

I was just about to tell him that, contrary to all expectations, my work had been successful, I had succeeded in my task!.

He made no reply to my question, but he added:

"I am also going back home today..."

Then, sadly−−

"It is a lot farther... it is a lot more difficult..."

I had a clear sensation that something extraordinary was happening. I was holding him close in my arms as if he were a little child; and yet it seemed to me that he was rushing headlong toward an abyss from which I could do nothing to restrain him...

His look was very serious as if he were far away.

"I have your sheep. And I have the sheep's box. And I have the muzzle..."

And he gave me a sad smile.

I waited for a long time. I could see that he was reviving little by little.

"Dear little man," I said to him, "you are afraid..."

He was afraid, there was no doubt about that. But he laughed gently.

"I shall be much more afraid this evening..."

Once again I felt frozen by the sense of something irreparable. And I knew that I could not bear the idea that I would never hear that laughter any more. For me, it was like a spring of freshwater in the desert.

"My little man," I said, "I want to hear you laugh again."

But he said to me:

"Tonight, it will be a year... my star, then, can be found right above the place where I came to the Earth, a year ago..."

"My little man," I said, "surely it is no more than a bad dream−− this business with the snake, and the meeting place, and the star..."

But he did not answer my question. He said to me, instead: "The thing that is important is the thing that is not seen..."

"Yes, I know..."

"It is just as it is with the flower. If you love a flower that lives on a star, it is lovely to look at the sky at night. All the stars bloom..."

"Of course..."

"It is just like the water. Because of the pulley, and the rope, what you gave me to drink was like music. You remember−− how good it was."

" Of course..."

"And at night you will look up at the stars. Where I live everything is so small that I cannot show you where my star is to be found. It is better, like that. My star will just be one of the stars, for you. And so you will love to watch all the stars in the heavens... they will all be your friends. And, besides, I am going to make you a present..."

He laughed once more.

"Oh, little prince, dear little prince! I love to hear that laughter!"

"That is my present. Just that. It will be as it was when we drank the water..."

"What are you trying to say?"

"Everyone has the stars," he answered, "but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others, they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For my businessman they were wealth. But all these stars are silent. You−− you alone−− will have the stars as no one else has them−−"

"What are you trying to say?"

"In one of the stars, I shall be living. In one of them, I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night... you−− only you−− will have stars that can laugh!"

And he laughed again.

"And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me. You will always be my friend. You will want to laugh with me. And you will sometimes open your window, so, for that pleasure... and your friends will be really amazed to see you laughing as you look up at the sky! And you will tell them, 'Yes, the stars always make me laugh!' And they will think you are crazy. It will be a very shabby trick that I shall have played on you..."

And he laughed again.

"It will be as if, in place of the stars, I had given you a great number of little bells that can laugh..."

And he laughed again. Then he grew solemn again:

"Tonight−− you know... do not come," said the little prince.

"I shall not leave you," I said.

"I will look as if I were suffering. I will look a little as if I were dying. It is like that. Do not come to see that. It is not worth the trouble..."

"I shall not leave you."

But he was worried.

"I tell you−− it is also because of the snake. He must not bite you. Snakes are malicious creatures. This one might bite you just for fun..."

"I shall not leave you."

But something seemed to reassure him:

"It is true that they have no more poison left for a second bite."

星の王子さま 別れ

That night I did not see him set off. He got away from me without making a sound. When I succeeded in catching up with him he was walking along with a quick and resolute step. He said to me merely:

"Ah! You are there..."

And he took me by the hand. But he was still worrying.

"It was wrong of you to come. You will suffer. I shall look as if I were dead; and that will not be true..."

I was silent.

"You understand... it is too far. I cannot carry this body with me. It is too heavy."

I said nothing.

"But it will be like an old abandoned shell. There is nothing sad about old shells..."

I was silent.

He was a little discouraged. But he made one more effort:

"You know, it will be very nice. I, too, shall look at the stars. All the stars will be wells with a rusty pulley. All the stars will pour out fresh water for me to drink..."

I was silent.

"That will be so amusing! You will have five hundred million little bells, and I will have five hundred million springs of freshwater..."

And he too said nothing more, because he was crying...

"Here it is. Let me step forward by myself."

星の王子さま 別れ

And he sat down because he was afraid. Then he said, again:

"You know−− my flower... I am responsible for her. And she is so weak! She is so naive! She has four thorns, of no use at all, to protect herself against all the world..."

I too sat down, because I was not able to stand up any longer.

"There now−− that is all..."

He still hesitated a little longer; then he got up. He got to his feet. I could not move at all.

There was only the smallest flash of yellow near his ankle. He remained motionless for a moment. He made no sound. He fell as gently as a tree falls. There was not even any sound, because of the sand.

星の王子さま 砂漠

The little prince Chapter 27  (1日3分 英語で星の王子さま)

Now six years have already passed... I have never told this story. My friends who met me on my return were well content to see me alive. I was sad, but I told them: "I am just tired."

These days I feel less grief. That means−− not entirely. But I know that he did go back to his planet because I did not find his body at daybreak. It was not very big... and at night I love to listen to the stars. They sound like five hundred million bells...

But here is something strange... I drew the muzzle for the little prince, but I forgot to add the leather strap to it. He will never have been able to fasten it on his sheep. And so I keep wondering: what is happening on his planet? Perhaps the sheep has eaten the flower...

Sometimes I say to myself: "Of course not! The little prince puts his flower under her glass globe every night, and he watches over his sheep very carefully..." Then I feel better. And there is sweetness in the laughter of all the stars.

Other times I say to myself: "Everyone forgets now and then. Just one time would be enough! Perhaps, he once forgot the glass globe, or the sheep got out, without making any noise, in the night..." And then the little bells are changed to tears...

Here is a great mystery. For those of us who also love the little prince, and for me, nothing in the universe can be the same if somewhere, somehow, a sheep that we never saw has or has not eaten a rose...

Look up at the sky. Ask yourselves: is it yes or no? Has the sheep eaten the flower? And you will see how everything changes...

And no grown−up will ever understand why this is important!

星の王子さま 世界で一番美しく悲しい場所

This is, for me, the most beautiful and the saddest landscape in the world. It is the same as that on the preceding page, but I have drawn a second picture again to impress it on your memory. It is here that the little prince appeared on Earth, and disappeared.

Look carefully so that you will be sure to recognize this place in case you travel someday to the African desert. And, if you should come upon this spot, please do not hurry past it. Wait for a moment right under the star. Then, if a little man appears who laughs, who has golden hair and who refuses to answer questions, you will know who he is. If this should happen, please be kind to me. please comfort me. Write to me soon and tell me that he has come back.

 登録は月330円ですが、毎日配信されますのでお得かと思います。1日あたり僅か10円です。

興味のある方は、最初の月は無料ですので、お気軽にご登録してみてください。
